It starts with a sweeping view: high above Kandersteg, trail runners on this route are soon rewarded with a stunning vista over the unspoilt Gastern Valley. The vast Spittelmatte plateau is also a sight to behold, but the real highlight of the route on Sunnbüel are the hidden Swiss stone pine lakes in the mountain forest. Once you’ve left these turquoise gems behind, you’ll find yet another impressive vantage point beneath the Üschenengrat.
Approach
By car via Spiez – Frutigen or the car shuttle train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.
Public Transport
The AFA bus runs hourly and takes 10 minutes from Kandersteg station to the valley station of the cable car. Then it's a comfortable gondola ride up to 1936 m above sea level.
Parking
On this map, drivers can quickly find a suitable parking option in the Oberland municipality. So then: engine off, trail shoe on!
Directions
First up, then right back down: After the gondola ride, there is a short descent from the Sunnbühl mountain station to the old Stock mountain station. Above the Gasterntal, the trail then turns towards Spittelmatte. The plateau beneath the Altels summit ends in the larch forest, where the temporarily meltwater-filled larch lakes are also found. The path now leads up to another level beneath the Üschenengrat. From here, runners head directly back to the mountain station.
Safety Instructions
The more extreme the conditions, the more important the equipment. Longer routes in the mountains require, for example, weatherproof clothing and a small running backpack with food.
