Admittedly, the banks of the Kander are already a paradise for runners. Downhill, however, it is worth turning left off the water path soon: Those who ascend on this trail finally get to know the Kandersteg “Höh” from its most beautiful side. Past pines and rare larches, the path leads elegantly through barren gravel pits up to this impressive viewpoint. Seen enough? Then it goes back along relaxing paths in the cooling forest to the 1200-inhabitant village.
Approach
Arrival via tunnel or lakeside view: Drivers come via Spiez–Frutigen or by car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.
Public Transport
Arrival at Kandersteg train station
South of the Lötschberg, north of the Kandertal: This station between Brig (38 min.) and Bern (61 min.) operates on an hourly schedule.
Parking
On this map, drivers can easily find suitable parking options in the Oberland community. So then: engine off, trail shoe on!
Directions
It really doesn't get more central than this: The trail starts at the Kandersteg train station square and heads downhill between the Kander and the train tracks. After a left turn at the dam, the route leads right into the forest for the first time. On a slightly exposed path, it goes uphill to the “Höh”. At the highest point, runners now follow the forest road via Waldegg towards Bütschels. At the old ski jumping ramp, the route finally branches off back towards the station.
