The cable car Sunnbüel takes you from Kandersteg to Sunnbüel where the hike begins. Take the historic path to the Gemmi Pass, which was an important transport link between the cantons of Bern and Valais a few hundred years ago. First a short descent to the plain "Spittelmatte", followed by the ascent to the mountain hotel Schwarenbach. The hike continues towards the Daubensee lake and finally to the destination, the Gemmi pass (2322 m a.s.l.) Here you will be rewarded with an impressive view of the Valais Alps. You can now hike back the same way or take the Gemmibahn down to Leukerbad to get to Kandersteg by bus or train.

Approach

By car via Spiez - Frutigen or by car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.

Public transport

The Lötschberg to the south, the Kandertal to the north: this station between Brig (38 min.) and Bern (61 min.) has hourly intervals - an ideal base for many excursions.

Arrival Sunnbüel
Please board in the direction of Gemmipass and Arvenseen! The AFA bus runs every hour within 10 minutes from Kandersteg train station to the valley station of the cable car. The gondola then takes you comfortably up to 1936 m above sea level.

Tips

Why not hike up the Gemmi Pass on a sledge? Sledges can be hired at the top station of the Sunnbüel cable car. You can enjoy a speedy toboggan run back down to Sunnbüel in sections. Watch out: hikers!
