From Kandersteg into the Gasterntal to the Waldhaus. Head up the valley to Gasternholz. There the path turns right. At this point, a sign indicates whether the hut is staffed. On a well-developed and secured mountain path through forest and rock sections, one climbs to the basin under the northern flank of the Balmhorn. This is crossed in a north-easterly direction over streams to the hut.
Alpine hikers often climb the Gasterespitz on the Wildelsigegrat the next day, with overwhelming views over the Kanderfirn to the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
Variant: Take the Gastern bus from Kandersteg station to Neubrücke Hotel Waldhaus. Reservation required at 033 671 11 72 (timetable)
Approach
By car via Frutigen or the car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg.
Public Transport
South of the Lötschberg, north of the Kandertal: this station between Brig (38 min) and Bern (61 min) has an hourly schedule – an ideal base for many excursions.
