UNESCO World Heritage Trail – Bench No. 2: Traces of the Rockfall at Fisistock
When the glaciers retreated, enormous rockfalls drastically altered the landscape. The largest of these occurred at the Fisistöcke, where the slip surface is still clearly visible. Massive rock masses thundered down into the Kandersteg plain and crashed against the opposite side of the valley. The traces of this impact can still be seen today, thousands of years later, in the Risete area (in front of you). The Fisistock rockfall filled the valley floor with debris up to 400 metres deep.
