UNESCO World Heritage Trail – Bench No. 12: Kandersteg’s Scouting Tradition
Lord Baden Powell, founder of the scout movement, often spent his summer holidays here, when he discovered a large vacant building that had been used as an engineering office during the construction of the Lötschberg tunnel. In 1923, together with Dr W. von Bonstetten, Federal Scoutmaster of the Swiss Scout Association, he decided to establish an international scout centre. With support from England, Holland and the USA, the association “International Scout Home Kandersteg” purchased the building and grounds. Since then, the Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) has continuously developed, and today remains a meeting point for scouts from all over the world.
