UNESCO World Heritage Trail – Bench No. 1: Geological Masterpieces of Kandersteg

Based on the fossils found within, geologists have shown that the region around Lake Oeschinen essentially consists of three so-called nappes: the Wildhorn nappe, the Gellihorn nappe, and the Doldenhorn nappe. These belong to the Helvetic nappes and are made up mainly of limestone and sandstone. The characteristic overlaps and fractures are particularly visible at the Bire, the Fisistöcke and the Jegertosse in the Gasterntal – vividly illustrating the immense forces that shaped the mountains.
