The Engstligenalp is a flat high plateau above Adelboden. It is framed by Tschingellochtighorn, Steghorn, Wildstrubel, and Fitzer, all between 2450 and 3300 meters high. The high plateau itself is at over 2000 meters. This ensures enough snow on the trail, often already in late autumn and until May, – but also leads to faster breathing for the cross-country skiers. The trail start is located in front of the Raclette hut, from where you follow the trail about one kilometer westward. There, you have the option to avoid the somewhat more challenging loops in Groppi and take a shortcut southwards. Then it continues past the namesake Lägerstein. The massive, rectangular rock block was probably carried here by glacier ice. Sometimes in the shade, then again in the sun, further glacial erratics and snow-covered alpine huts are passed. In two elongated loops, the trail follows up to the valley station of the Dossen ski lift and in the last section then gently downhill to the tow lift back to the starting point. The beautiful Engstligenalp, which can be perfectly explored with long skis, belongs to the cultural landscapes and floodplain areas of national significance: under the thick snow cover, countless streams and brooks flow over the plateau. At the northern exit, they collect and form the Engstligen Falls, which are among the highest and most water-rich waterfalls in the country. They plunge a total of 600 meters into the valley in two stages. The cross-country skiers, meanwhile, take the aerial cableway to get back to Adelboden. It brings them to Unter dem Birg, about 4.5 kilometers south of the village.
