Iffigenalp - Schnidejoch - Rawil - Iffigenalp

This tour offers plenty of variety. The start is at the Iffigenalp around the farmed alps. The first ascent leads to the Iffigsee, whose water surface always shines in different colors depending on the season and weather conditions. The route continues upwards through a wide valley to the Wildhornhütte. From here, the terrain becomes more barren and stony. Passing the Chilchli glacier, you reach the high point on the Schnidejoch at 2756 m above sea level. The Schnidejoch is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the European high mountains: since the hot summer of 2003, numerous individual finds have come to light under a melting ice field, the oldest of which are more than 6500 years old and come from Neolithic hunter-gatherers.

Here you change canton and continue on the Valais side in the direction of Lac de Téné and over karstic and correspondingly fissured rock to the Plan des Roses. This is a surprisingly wide plain. It is a damp area with frequent accumulations of water and in summer, Valais Hérens cows graze up here. Once you reach the Rawil Pass, you cross the cantonal border again and then it's all downhill. The path meanders impressively along the mountain down into the Iffigtal valley, back to the starting point of the tour.

This long hike can be made into a 2-day tour with an overnight stay in the Wildhornhütte.
