At the far end of the village take the small alley on the left off the paved road. Continue on the scenic mountain route - with superb views down to the valley and Kander waterfalls - and the relatively easy hike into Gasterntal.
Alternative route: Take the mountain hiking route from Sunnbüel cable car base station and follow the Kander waterfalls to the Gastern road. Shortly after the stone bridge, take the walkway over the river Kander to Hotel Waldhaus. Soon afterwards, you will see the start of the mountain hiking route to the Balmhornhütte.
After passing through woodlands and a steady climb, the valley opens out at Selden (Hotel Steinbock and Hotel Gasterntal-Selden). This is the start of the route to Gfelalp and Lötschen Pass. Another trail continues as far as the Heimritz inn, the start of the route to Kanderfirn.
Shortcut: Gasterntal bus (booking essential!)
